The abrupt cancellation of a fireworks festival, promoted as a simultaneous display across three cities on the shores of Lake Biwa in western Japan, has left advance ticket buyers and local authorities puzzled and angry.
According to Kyodo News, the organizing committee decided to call off the event, which was scheduled for this month, citing no specific reasons and only posting a brief notice on its official website. Those who had purchased tickets through official distribution channels said they received no prior warning and had to seek information on their own.
Representatives from the three host cities—Otsu, Kusatsu, and Moriyama—where the fireworks were to be launched simultaneously, said they were also informed of the cancellation only via email and had not been consulted beforehand. One unnamed official expressed dismay: “We had prepared infrastructure and coordinated security; now all plans have collapsed.”
Advance ticket sales for the event had been substantial, with many spectators expected to flock to the shores of Lake Biwa to witness the synchronized show. The organizing committee has yet to announce a refund plan, adding to the frustration of ticket buyers.
The incident has drawn further attention as it comes just days after an explosion at Aeon Mall left two women dead. Investigators said the two victims were instructed by their employer to return to the blast area, which is linked to another incident under investigation.
The festival's organizing committee has not issued any further official statements. Observers suggest that the unexplained cancellation could undermine public trust in community events across the region.
