Japan's crude oil imports from Middle East hit record low in April

Tokyo, May 14, 2026 – Japan's crude oil imports from the Middle East in April 2026 fell to an all-time low, signaling the Asian economic giant's push to reduce its heavy reliance on the region, which still dominates the country's energy import profile.

According to data from Japan's Ministry of Finance, Middle East crude imports in April averaged just 2.1 million barrels per day, down more than 15% year-on-year, the lowest since records began.

Analysts attribute the drop partly to increased imports from alternative sources such as Russia and the Americas, as well as expanded use of renewables and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Japanese government has also encouraged refineries to seek more diverse supply sources to minimize geopolitical risks.
