A craft brewer in central Japan is hoping a U-shaped "wobbling" glass it designed will prompt beer drinkers to alternate with water, thereby limiting excessive drinking and the risk of dehydration.
According to the brewer, the glass's distinctive rounded base means it cannot stand steadily on a flat surface unless the drinker keeps holding it or sets it down in just the right way, producing a "wobbling" effect when placed down. That feature is intended to remind drinkers to take a break between sips of beer and reach for water.
The idea for the glass grew out of a wish to encourage responsible drinking habits, particularly given that beer drinking is a common part of social culture in Japan. Alternating with water is seen as a simple way to reduce the risk of intoxication and dehydration during long gatherings.
It is not yet clear when the brewer plans to bring the product to market, or whether the glass will be sold widely.
