Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Tunis on Saturday to denounce the worsening economic crisis and a wave of arrests targeting political activists, in the latest demonstration amid rising instability in the North African country.
Demonstrators held up signs criticizing the government and demanding better living conditions as unemployment and inflation soar. Many also voiced outrage over the recent detention of opposition figures, which they described as political repression.
Since President Kais Saied assumed power in 2021, Tunisia has witnessed a consolidation of authority and increased crackdowns on dissenting voices. A prolonged economic crisis, marked by shortages of food and fuel, has fueled public anger.
The protests come as international observers express concern over the state of democracy in Tunisia, once hailed as a model of the Arab Spring.
