Speaking at a conference in Rome, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani remarked that many countries in the region have concluded that the United States is an unreliable partner. He made this comment amid a series of policy decisions by the Trump administration that have raised concerns among European allies.
Tajani stressed that European nations need to strengthen cooperation and become more autonomous in security and foreign affairs, rather than relying entirely on Washington. According to him, the sudden shifts in US positions on multiple international issues have eroded regional trust.
The Italian diplomat's remarks come at a time when transatlantic relations face strains, particularly over trade and security. Several European countries have voiced concerns about Washington's commitment to NATO and to bilateral trade agreements.
Earlier, some European officials have also highlighted the need to build stronger joint defense capabilities. Tajani's statement reflects a growing trend among European political circles to view the United States as unpredictable and lacking credibility.
