In a recent declaration, a Lebanese lawmaker aligned with Hezbollah asserted that the armed group will never disarm. The statement comes amid escalating tensions between Hezbollah and opposition forces in Lebanon, as well as mounting pressure from Western nations demanding the militia surrender its weapons.
The lawmaker emphasized that Hezbollah is an inseparable part of Lebanon and that disarmament would weaken the country's ability to defend itself against external threats. He also criticized international efforts to intervene in Lebanon's internal affairs, calling them an infringement on national sovereignty.
The statement read: "Hezbollah will continue to hold its weapons to protect Lebanon and its people. We will never bow to any pressure, whether domestic or foreign."
Founded in the 1980s with Iranian backing, Hezbollah is now one of Lebanon's most powerful political and military forces. The group has been involved in multiple conflicts, including the war in Syria and clashes with Israel. The United States and several European countries designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
