Three days after torrential rain battered Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, the toll from the flooding continues to rise. According to the Chiba prefectural government announced on Sunday, around 1,300 homes have been flooded, with 10 deaths and one person still missing.
The death toll has increased by two from the previously recorded figure of 8 on August 14, when floods paralyzed the region's transportation network. Rescue teams are still searching for the missing and assisting affected residents.
The prolonged heavy rain has cut off many roads and caused widespread suspension of rail services, hampering rescue efforts and the movement of residents. Authorities are working to mitigate the aftermath, restore infrastructure, and continue surveying hazardous areas to prevent further damage.
Initial assessments describe the Chiba flooding as one of the most severe natural disasters in the Kanto region this year, prompting local authorities to mobilize all available resources in response.
