At least 12 people were killed and 21 injured in Russian drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and its region. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks and called for stronger air defenses, as EU ministers met to discuss support.
At least 12 people were killed and 21 others wounded in a series of Russian airstrikes targeting Ukraine's capital Kyiv and its surrounding region, according to local authorities.
In a Telegram post on Tuesday, the head of the Kyiv regional military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said: “Tonight, the Kyiv region came under a massive attack by Russian missiles and drones.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned “Russian terrorism” and said an Indian citizen was among the dead, while urging allies to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that at least eight people were killed and five others, including two children, were injured in the overnight drone and missile attacks on the city. Ukrainian prosecutors added that four more people died in the Kyiv region, and a residential building in the outskirts of Boryspil was damaged.
Zelenskyy said 50 people were evacuated from the building in Boryspil. On social media, he wrote: “Russia always plans its attacks to cause as much damage to people's lives as possible, and they succeed only when air defense is insufficient.”
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it struck military and energy facilities in Kyiv, Odesa, and areas around these cities overnight. Ukraine's border service also said Russian forces shelled the Orlivka ferry station on the border with Romania, a NATO member state.
Ukraine Strikes Russian Port
Meanwhile, in Russia, a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at the Ust-Luga port area, a major export hub in the northwest, and Moscow was dealing with drones. In the Samara region, a Ukrainian drone attack hit the town of Novokuibyshevsk, shattering windows of an apartment building, according to Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev on Telegram. Novokuibyshevsk and the surrounding Volga River area host several large Russian oil refineries operated by state-owned oil company Rosneft.
Russia's acting governor of the Belgorod region said a Ukrainian attack killed one person. Both Russia and Ukraine deny intentionally targeting civilians. Meanwhile, the commander of Ukraine's drone forces said the country has struck 54 Russian vessels in its “shadow fleet” during August to curb illegal oil sales that finance Russia's war in Ukraine.
EU Meeting
The attacks came as European Union defense and foreign ministers gathered in Ireland to discuss enhancing Ukraine's air defenses. Ukraine is short of interceptor missiles, particularly US-made Patriot systems used to counter ballistic missile threats. In recent months, both sides have escalated long-range attacks targeting infrastructure such as warehouses, businesses, oil facilities, ports, and ships, leading to rising civilian casualties.
