US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Canada have reached an agreement to avoid high tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods.
The announcement came just before a midnight deadline for imposing 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian products, including electronics, industrial machinery, furniture, and dairy.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote: “I have delayed the 50% tariff on Canada, which was set to take effect tomorrow morning, for 3 days, based on the fact that Canada and the US, after completing the paperwork, have reached a deal!”
He also mentioned the possibility of reviving the Keystone XL pipeline—a project canceled by his predecessor Joe Biden—as a positive part of the agreement.
Details of the full agreement have yet to be released, but the move helps avoid an escalating trade war between the two neighboring countries.
