On July 25, 2026, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) reported that a section of expressway in Kumamoto Prefecture was damaged after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake.
According to initial information, the affected section of expressway lies in the area that experienced the strongest shaking. MLIT experts are conducting detailed inspections to assess the extent of damage and determine remedial measures.
The earthquake struck around that time, causing strong tremors in many parts of southern Japan, including Kumamoto Prefecture. Local authorities are coordinating with rescue teams to respond to the emergency situation.
No casualties have been reported by officials so far. MLIT will continue to provide updates as inspection results become available.
