At least one man was killed and five others wounded in a shooting attack in central Israel on Sunday. The Magen David Adom ambulance service said a 35-year-old man died from gunshot wounds, while other casualties were taken to two hospitals, including two in critical condition.
Israeli police said they neutralized the suspected gunman after a pursuit. The suspect was a Palestinian citizen of Israel from the nearby city of Tayibe. Police also confirmed that the attacker's weapon was recovered and they are searching for additional suspects, with police, border police, and special forces involved.
Police urged the public to remain vigilant, follow instructions, and report any suspicious activity.
The attack occurred at a gas station at the entrance to the Kochav Yair area, near the occupied West Bank city of Qalqilya. The assailant opened fire in Kochav Yair and continued at the entrances to the nearby towns of Tzur Yitzhak and Tzur Natan. An army radio source said the Shin Bet internal security agency and police conducted a sweep operation in Tayibe and imposed a security lockdown on several nearby Arab villages.
Hamas praised the attack as an “heroic” act but did not claim responsibility. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office held a situation assessment following the incident.
