A Tigerair Taiwan aircraft operating a flight from Taipei to Hokkaido made an emergency landing at New Chitose Airport on Friday morning. The incident occurred after the crew detected smoke in the cockpit and decided to land immediately. The plane touched down safely, and no injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
According to Japan's Ministry of Transport, the cause of the incident is under investigation. New Chitose Airport temporarily closed one runway to handle the situation, causing some delays for other flights. Authorities conducted an inspection of the aircraft shortly after landing.
The incident comes amid a series of aviation safety events in the region. Earlier this week, Japan recorded a small tsunami following a magnitude-7.8 earthquake off the coast of the Philippines. However, there is no evidence linking the two events.
