Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez apologised on Thursday after criticising the club's leadership, a move that came after talks with manager Michael Carrick and senior officials.
According to club sources, Martinez met Carrick and the board after training, two days after he said the team needed more investment to compete at the highest level, following Tuesday's 0-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
In an Instagram post — his second statement since the controversial interview — Martinez wrote: "Today I met the club's leadership and the manager. It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak frankly about what happened after Tuesday's match."
A club source said any internal disciplinary measures would remain confidential, stressing that Martinez's public apology was his own decision and that all parties involved consider the matter closed.
English media, including the BBC, reported that Manchester United fined the defender over the outspoken comments.
Martinez acknowledged that frustration over the defeat caused him to lose control, and apologised for choosing the wrong moment to express his emotions.
"Everyone knows I am someone who lives for football and always gives everything for it," he said. "The frustration of the defeat made me express my emotions at a time and place that perhaps were not appropriate, and for that I want to apologise."
In his post-match interview, the Argentina international named sporting director Jason Wilcox directly, arguing that United need more signings to compete with their rivals and build a squad capable of challenging in Europe.
Martinez acknowledged that his comments did not reflect the unity needed at Old Trafford, while reaffirming his belief that everyone at the club is working towards a common goal.
"Our club is strongest when we are all united, and I realise that my words at that moment did not help that," he said. "I know that everyone at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition, bringing the success the club and the fans deserve."
Concluding his statement, Martinez closed the matter: "With this situation behind us, we are fully focused on winning together."
United are currently 13th in the Premier League after six matches — their worst start in 40 years. The team travel to face seventh-placed Leeds United on Sunday.
