Marina Mabrey tied the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points, fueled by exceptional three-point shooting (9-of-18 from beyond the arc), powering the Toronto Tempo to a decisive 125-97 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on their home court.
Mabrey had previously set a WNBA three-point record in a win over Connecticut on June 19, making nine three-pointers and scoring 37 points — her previous career high. In this game, she surpassed that milestone late in the third quarter with 39 points, then added 14 more to match the record held by A'ja Wilson and Liz Cambage.
Toronto (9-9) never trailed, jumping out to a 19-6 run within the first four minutes, thanks to three-pointers from Mabrey, Maria Conde, and Julie Allemand. The lead swelled to as many as 35 points. The Tempo shot efficiently from deep, finishing 20-of-42 from three-point range.
Conde finished with 13 points (3-of-5 from three) and seven rebounds. Allemand contributed 13 points (3-of-3 from three) and a career-high 14 assists. Laura Juskaite added 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
Mabrey's nine three-pointers nearly matched the entire Sparks' output (11-of-38 from three). Los Angeles's leading scorers were Nneka Ogwumike (21 points, seven rebounds), Dearica Hamby (21 points, nine rebounds), and Rae Burrell (17 points). However, the rest of the Sparks' roster provided little support.
Los Angeles guards Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins struggled with foul trouble, while reserve Cameron Brink was sidelined with an ankle injury. The Sparks entered the game on a two-game winning streak against the Tempo from the previous month, but with leading scorer Kelsey Plum sidelined due to a leg injury suffered in an earlier win over New York, their offense collapsed from the outset.
