Passenger numbers on Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train rose 4% year-on-year during the 13-day Golden Week holiday period, reaching 4.93 million trips as favorable weather and strong leisure travel demand boosted traffic. The increase reflects a robust recovery of domestic tourism after the pandemic.
Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train saw passenger numbers increase by 4% during the 13-day Golden Week holiday period ending April 30, the operator reported.
A total of 4.93 million passengers traveled on the high-speed rail line between April 18 and 30, up from 4.74 million in the same period last year. The growth was attributed to favorable weather conditions and strong demand for leisure travel.
According to the operating company, passenger numbers rose steadily throughout the holiday, especially on weekends and public holidays. This year's Golden Week, lasting 13 days, is one of Japan's longest holiday periods, encouraging long-distance travel.
The Tokaido Shinkansen line connects Tokyo with major cities including Osaka, Nagoya, and Kyoto, and is Japan's busiest high-speed rail route. The increase in passenger numbers reflects a robust recovery of domestic tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Separately, reports indicate that the number of Japanese travelers to China during the same period declined sharply due to diplomatic tensions between the two nations. The Tokaido Shinkansen remains the top choice for domestic travelers, especially during major holiday periods.
