Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in a Manhattan federal court on Friday (local time) to two charges related to the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The two charges are federal stalking resulting in death and using federal facilities to stalk resulting in death.
During the hearing, Mangione stated that he had researched UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference and sent an email posing as an investor to gather detailed information. He used this information to target Thompson and carry out the shooting.
“I shot Thompson in Manhattan,” Mangione told the judge, acknowledging that he knew the act was illegal.
Brian Thompson, 50, a father of two, ran America's largest health insurance company. He was shot dead on a New York street in December 2024. The incident triggered a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione's arrest at a McDonald's restaurant in Pennsylvania.
Mangione still faces state charges related to the murder, including second-degree murder and weapons charges. Previously, he had pleaded not guilty to these charges, and there has been no change in his plea. The state trial is scheduled to begin next month.
