Japan and the Philippines have agreed that the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) will send personnel to participate in a joint parachute training exercise on Batanes, the northernmost island province of the Philippines, which lies directly opposite Taiwan across the Luzon Strait.
The move was confirmed by defense officials from both nations on Monday. It comes amid rising tensions in the region surrounding Taiwan and aims to strengthen military cooperation between Tokyo and Manila.
Batanes is a small archipelago of strategic importance, located approximately 200 kilometers south of Taiwan. The JGSDF's participation in airborne drills there marks a new step in bilateral defense ties, which have been tightened in recent years through security agreements and joint exercises.
According to the plan, the exercise will include tactical parachute training, coordination between Japanese paratroopers and Philippine special forces. Specific details regarding timing and the number of participating troops have not been officially released.
