SoftBank Group's Q1 Net Profit Drops 17.7% on Heavy AI Investment

SoftBank Group Corp. on July 31 reported financial results for the first quarter of its current fiscal year, posting a net profit of 347.33 billion yen (approximately $2.2 billion) for the three months through June, a 17.7% decline from the same period last year.

The company attributed the drop primarily to its aggressive investment push in artificial intelligence, which includes a substantial investment in OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot. SoftBank is pursuing a bold strategic pivot toward cutting-edge AI technologies, despite short-term financial pressures.

Despite the lower profit, SoftBank maintains a positive long-term outlook, betting on the global AI market's expansion. The group's investments in startups and AI infrastructure are expected to be key growth drivers in the coming quarters.
