US Marine Arrested in Okinawa Referred to Prosecutors

TOKYO — A US Marine stationed in Okinawa Prefecture has been arrested and referred to prosecutors, according to breaking news reported by Japanese media.

Initial reports did not specify the identity of the person arrested, the unit they were assigned to, or the conduct that led to the arrest. The transfer of the case to prosecutors is the next step in Japan's criminal procedure, following the completion of the initial phase of the investigation.

Cases involving US service members stationed in Okinawa typically draw significant attention from local residents, given the concentration of US military bases in the prefecture and past disputes over security and public order around those installations.

There was no further information available on how the case might proceed, nor any official response from US or Japanese authorities.
