The United Nations on April 8 released casualty figures for Ukraine since the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted in February 2022, stating that 15,850 people, including 791 children, have been killed. Kayoko Gotoh, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division of the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), emphasized before the Security Council that "the actual number could be significantly higher."
Peace negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow remain deadlocked. U.S. President Donald Trump attempted to mediate and announced a three-day ceasefire in early April, but fighting has continued.
On the same day, Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least six people. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, a 15-year-old boy was among three people killed in a ballistic missile strike on the city of Pryluky in Chernihiv region on the morning of April 8. In Sumy region, two people were killed when two Russian drones attacked the city of Hlukhiv in Shostka district, as announced by the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office on Facebook. In the evening, at least one person was killed and one wounded in a drone strike on a civilian car in the city of Buryn, according to the head of the regional military administration, Oleg Grigorov.
On the Russian side, acting Governor of Belgorod region Alexander Shuvaev reported two people killed and six wounded in the past 24 hours due to a Ukrainian drone attack on the village of Borisovka. The Russian Defense Ministry said it intercepted and destroyed 70 Ukrainian drones in six hours, from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. GMT on April 8, across multiple Russian regions and the annexed Crimean Peninsula. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that several drones approaching the capital were shot down. Yaroslavl Governor Mikhail Yevrayev reported that a drone strike hit an industrial facility in the region. By evening, acting Governor of Bryansk region Yegor Kovalchuk said two men were wounded in an attack on a gas station in the village of Smotrova Buda in Klintsovsky district, though he did not specify whether the weapon used was a drone or a missile.
