According to Iranian media reports on August 20, the Supreme Leader has issued a decree appointing Mohsen Rezaei, former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as his envoy to the Supreme National Security Council.
Rezaei, 69, served as IRGC commander from 1981 to 1997, and later held several key government positions, including Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council. He also ran in Iran's presidential elections in 2009, 2013, and 2021, but did not win.
The Supreme National Security Council is the body responsible for formulating and coordinating Iran's defense and security policies, chaired by the Supreme Leader himself. Analysts view Rezaei's appointment as an effort to bolster strategic advisory roles amid regional volatility.
Previously, Rezaei coordinated economic affairs in the government, contributing to national development programs. The latest decision reaffirms his standing within Iran's political system.
