Eighteen-year-old Spanish talent Lamine Yamal received widespread praise from football fans for displaying support for Palestine during Barcelona's La Liga title celebrations. In videos widely shared on social media Monday (11 May), Yamal is seen waving a Palestinian flag from an open-top bus, responding to excited cheers from the crowd.
Tens of thousands lined the streets of Barcelona to greet the players as they paraded through the city. Barcelona secured their 29th La Liga title with a 2-0 victory over archrivals Real Madrid on Sunday (10 May). This marked the second time the league title was decided by an El Clasico match.
Since Israel's genocidal war on Gaza began in October 2023, Barcelona has become a major hub for pro-Palestinian activism in Spain. The city regularly hosts large pro-Palestine protests and serves as a departure point for aid convoys attempting to break the blockade on the besieged and bombarded territory.
