La Liga 2026-2027: Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid, Barcelona Chase Three-Peat

Less than two months after the 2026 World Cup concluded, Spanish football is heating up again as the 2026-2027 La Liga season officially kicks off this Saturday. Here are the five most notable storylines ahead of the new campaign.

Can Mourinho Take Real Madrid Back to the Top?

Jose Mourinho has officially returned to Real Madrid after 13 years, with a three-year contract announced in June. The Portuguese coach's mission is to end the club's two-season trophy drought.

During the summer transfer window, Real Madrid brought in a host of quality signings, including Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, and Yan Diomande. Notably, the club also persuaded Vinicius Jr to extend his contract until 2032, putting an end to transfer speculation.

Mourinho's appointment is widely seen by pundits as President Florentino Perez's effort to establish discipline in the dressing room. However, the relationship between him and Vinicius will be closely monitored, following the alleged racism incident between the Brazilian forward and Mourinho's Benfica side last season.

Although he led Real Madrid to a La Liga title in his previous tenure, Mourinho's recent tactical style is considered somewhat outdated compared to modern football trends. Barcelona will certainly look to exploit this as they aim to beat their eternal rivals led by Mourinho himself.

Barcelona Eyeing a Three-Peat

Barcelona successfully defended their title last season under Hansi Flick, clinching the championship three rounds early with a 2-0 win at Real Madrid in El Clasico. It was the club's 29th La Liga crown.

Young star Lamine Yamal (18) continued to shine, scoring 16 goals and providing 11 assists, earning the Player of the Season award for the second consecutive year despite struggling with injuries for a long spell. Flick has signed a new two-year deal, and with Yamal maturing further, Barcelona are considered the top contenders for a third straight title—something they haven't achieved since their golden era under Pep Guardiola (2008-2011).

New Anti-Time-Wasting Rules

The Spanish Refereeing Committee has introduced a series of new regulations for the 2026-2027 season, primarily aimed at curbing time-wasting. Many of these rules were already applied at the 2026 World Cup.

Under the new rules, substituted players must leave the pitch within 10 seconds. If they are slower, the incoming player will not be allowed to play until the first stoppage after at least one minute of play has resumed. Injured players must leave the field for treatment and can only return after at least one minute of play since the restart.

Additionally, if a player takes more than five seconds on a throw-in or goal kick, possession goes to the opposition (a throw-in becomes a corner). VAR officials' powers have also been expanded, allowing intervention in cases of second yellow cards, mistaken identity on red cards, and incorrect corner decisions.

Experts will be watching closely how these rules operate in practice, especially in a league that has seen its fair share of refereeing controversies.

Atletico Madrid Under Heavy Pressure

Villarreal surprisingly finished third last season under coach Marcelino Garcia Toral, securing a Champions League spot and finishing above Atletico Madrid. Despite reaching the Champions League semifinals and the Copa del Rey final, Atletico finished fourth and empty-handed. Coach Diego Simeone admitted the pressure is weighing on him and his players ahead of the new season.

Star Argentine striker Julian Alvarez will not be sold despite interest from Barcelona. However, Atletico will certainly try to fill the void left by veteran Antoine Griezmann after he joined Orlando City in the MLS.

On the flip side, Villarreal lost coach Marcelino due to contract disputes. His replacement is Inigo Perez, who led Rayo Vallecano to the Conference League final last season.

Real Betis – The Quiet Force

Manuel Pellegrini led Real Betis back to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years with a fifth-place finish last season. At 72, Pellegrini remains one of Europe's most consistent coaches. Since taking charge in 2020, he has gradually lifted Betis out of the shadow of their neighbors Sevilla.

Betis won the Copa del Rey in 2022, ending a 17-year trophy drought, and reached the Conference League final in 2025 but lost to Chelsea. Despite finishing nine points behind Atletico last season, they hope to balance their Champions League participation with a push to go further in La Liga.
