An Israeli airstrike targeted a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in central Gaza early Monday, killing at least one person and wounding several others. The strike occurred near al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. The casualties add to a growing list of victims as Israel continues military operations in the territory.
In a Telegram post, the Israeli military said it targeted two “militants” in the Deir al-Balah area on Sunday night, including Muhammad Abdul Nasser Jaber Abu Asad, whom it described as a member of Hamas’s elite force who took part in the October 7 attack on Israel. The military claimed both men had recently sought to carry out operations against Israeli forces and civilians, and were attempting to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities. The statement called these activities a “systematic violation of the ceasefire.”
The airstrikes continue despite the U.S.-mediated ceasefire aimed at ending Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, and amid diplomatic efforts to disarm Hamas and secure the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory.
Earlier, on Sunday, three Palestinians, including a 4-year-old child, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on areas including Khan Younis in southern Gaza and the town of az-Zawayda in the Deir al-Balah region. A man wounded in an attack on Khan Younis on Sunday died later from his injuries. Another individual, hurt in an Israeli strike on a cafe near Gaza Port last week, succumbed to wounds on Monday.
In total, 1,288 Palestinians have been killed since the October 2025 ceasefire, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The overall death toll since the Gaza war began in October 2023 has risen to 73,422, with 174,401 others injured.
