An Israeli airstrike on a residential building in northern Gaza on the evening of May 27 killed at least 10 people, including 4 children, according to Gaza health officials. The attack also left more than 20 others wounded.
Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary, reporting from Gaza City, said Palestinians are fearful of further Israeli attacks. According to the journalist, some children were playing in a nearby park when the airstrike occurred. Parents are reluctant to let their children leave their homes or tents, fearing they could be killed in Israeli strikes.
The airstrike came just hours after dozens of Palestinians attended the funeral of Mohammad Odeh, the Hamas armed wing leader who was killed in an Israeli attack on May 26. Odeh's wife and son also died in that attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Odeh was the head of Hamas's intelligence unit at the time of the October 7, 2023 attack. He was appointed as the commander of the group's armed wing only a week before his death, after his predecessor Izz al-Din al-Haddad was eliminated by Israel.
A relative of Odeh, Abu al-Abd Odeh, described the situation in Gaza as extremely difficult: "It's all lies and nonsense to say the war is over. That only applies to the occupation; for the Palestinian people and the people of Gaza, there is no ceasefire or improvement in living conditions. We don't feel any real change."
According to local authorities, Israel has violated the ceasefire agreement that took effect in October 2024 more than 3,000 times. Both Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the agreement. Israel claims that Hamas's refusal to disarm is the main obstacle, while Hamas says negotiations have stalled due to ongoing violations and restrictions on aid entering Gaza.
The Gaza Government Media Office posted on social media platform X on May 27 that Israel has allowed only a fraction of the aid trucks to enter Gaza under the terms of the ceasefire. The office stated: "Since the ceasefire agreement took effect, over 227 days, the Israeli occupation forces have committed a total of 3,005 serious violations of the agreement. Regarding the humanitarian and relief situation, only 49,973 trucks have entered the Gaza Strip, compared to the expected 135,600 trucks, a compliance rate of no more than 36%."
