Around 100 people, including 35 police officers, were injured in fan-related incidents during the first-round German Cup match between hosts Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern on Friday night, local police confirmed.
The match had been flagged as high-risk due to the rivalry between supporter groups. As regulation time ended with the score at 0-0, the game was suspended for approximately 30 minutes.
Police said away fans fired flares toward the main stand, prompting home supporters to surge onto the field in reaction.
“In total, 85 people required medical attention, with eight needing hospital treatment for further care,” police said in a statement.
The match resumed after “police officers deployed on the pitch to physically force individuals back to the home fans' seating area.”
Nearly 1,400 police officers were mobilized to bolster security for the match between the two rival clubs, which are located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) apart.
The match ended 1-0 in favor of Kaiserslautern, thanks to a goal from Ibrahim Kanate in the 120th minute.
