Paceman Jayden Seales delivered an impressive performance with his fourth five-wicket haul, helping West Indies defeat Pakistan by 90 runs in the first Test at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.
After gaining a 29-run lead in the first innings, West Indies scored 181 runs in their second innings, setting Pakistan a target of 211 runs on day four. The visitors managed only 120 runs in just over 40 overs, leaving a day unused.
Seales (5-20) and his fellow pacemen produced a superb bowling display, triggering Pakistan's collapse from 71-9. Pakistan captain Babar Azam remained unbeaten on 58, combining with Mohammad Abbas (23) at number 11 for a brief resistance, but West Indies' victory was sealed early.
Shan Masood, who had fractured a finger while scoring 109 in the first innings, batted at number eight in the second innings. He managed just three runs before being dismissed by Seales.
Captain Roston Chase dedicated the win to West Indies legend Garry Sobers, who passed away earlier this month. "We wanted to make him proud and spoke about that before the match. I hope he's smiling down on us," Chase said after the match. "I love the direction of this team. It doesn't depend on one or two players; everyone contributes at important moments."
Babar Azam attributed Pakistan's defeat to a lack of partnerships. "Today, as a batting unit, we were not up to the mark. We kept losing wickets in clusters and failed with the bat. That's something we are working on improving," he said.
The second and final Test of the series will be played in Port of Spain next Sunday.
