World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has confirmed he will miss this year's US Open after failing to recover in time from a right knee injury that has sidelined him since his Wimbledon triumph.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Friday (August 22), the 25-year-old Italian said he would not be able to compete when the tournament begins on August 30.
“Although I have worked very hard with my team and doctors, we have had to make the difficult decision that I cannot compete at this year's US Open. In recent days I have returned to the practice court in Monte Carlo and realized that I still need more time to fully recover from my right knee injury,” Sinner wrote.
“I am sad and disappointed, because New York has always held a special place in my heart. I was really looking forward to coming back and playing in front of those amazing fans in that electric atmosphere.”
Sinner won the US Open title in 2024, defeating Taylor Fritz in the final for his first triumph at Flushing Meadows. This season, he boasts an impressive 44-3 record with six titles, including his second consecutive Wimbledon crown after beating Alexander Zverev last month.
Notably, Sinner endured a shock at Roland Garros 2025, exiting in the second round despite leading by two sets, due to physical issues in hot conditions. He then sat out until Wimbledon, where he captured his fifth Grand Slam title.
Sinner's absence opens the door for rivals, especially Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Sinner in last year's US Open final. Alcaraz has confirmed he will be ready to compete in New York after recovering from a right wrist injury sustained in April, promising an exciting tournament.
This marks the first time Sinner will miss a Grand Slam since his debut at the 2019 US Open.
