World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury, the Italian player confirmed.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” he said in a statement posted on the ATP's official website on Sunday.
“My right knee has been bothering me, and although we have worked hard with the medical staff, I have to accept that I am not ready to compete.”
The tournament begins on Thursday, the same day as the closing ceremony of the Masters event in Montreal, which Sinner also missed.
The five-time Grand Slam champion had a six-match winning streak at the 1000 level before entering the North American hard-court swing, and subsequently missed the event in Canada. The 24-year-old said at the time that the decision was made to “prioritize health.”
Sinner's withdrawal from Cincinnati follows that of world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who also pulled out due to a wrist injury, leaving him struggling to defend his title at the US Open.
The Cincinnati Open and the Montreal Masters are the two main warm-up events before the season's final Grand Slam, the US Open, which begins in New York on August 30.
