In a meeting in Baghdad today, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani reaffirmed their countries' determination to stand against what is often termed 'global arrogance'—a phrase frequently used by Iranian officials to refer to the United States and its Western allies.
According to an official statement from Iran, the two sides discussed various bilateral and regional issues, underscoring the importance of enhancing cooperation in security, economic, and political fields. Ghalibaf asserted, 'Iran and Iraq share a principled stance in opposing any external interference and supporting each other's national sovereignty.'
For his part, al-Mashhadani emphasized the strong ties between the two neighboring nations and highlighted Iraq's appreciation of Iran's role in maintaining regional stability. The two leaders also agreed on the need to coordinate actions at international forums to counter sanctions and external pressures.
Ghalibaf's visit to Iraq is part of efforts to promote high-level dialogue between the two countries, which have a complex but increasingly intertwined relationship following the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and regional political shifts. Analysts suggest that this joint statement reflects a broader trend of strengthening alliances among regional countries to reduce dependence on external powers.
