Iran is taking steps to enhance social security protections for workers engaged through online platforms such as delivery apps and ride-hailing services. The move comes as the number of workers in Iran’s gig economy has surged in recent years.
According to Iranian officials, the government is considering new policies to extend social insurance and health coverage to this group, which typically does not receive benefits enjoyed by traditional employees. Measures include requiring digital platforms to contribute to a social security fund for workers and enabling workers to purchase insurance at subsidized rates.
A representative from Iran’s Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare stressed that protecting platform workers’ rights is not only a social issue but also a key factor for the sustainable development of the digital economy. Discussions with technology companies and worker representatives are underway to establish a suitable legal framework.
This effort is part of Iran’s broader push to modernize its social security system in response to shifts in the labour market amid the digital age.
