Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf affirmed today that the Strait of Hormuz will be managed by Iran in accordance with international law. The statement comes amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf region, which hosts the world's most crucial oil shipping route.
Speaking in a parliamentary session, Ghalibaf stressed: "The Strait of Hormuz is an inseparable part of Iranian territory, and its management will be carried out based on the principles of international law to ensure maritime security and stability."
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategic chokepoints, with approximately 20% of global oil passing through it daily. Iran has long asserted its sovereignty over the area while warning it will respond to any actions threatening security or obstructing lawful maritime activity.
Ghalibaf's remarks follow a series of military exercises and diplomatic tensions between Iran and Western nations, particularly the United States. In recent months, Iran has conducted large-scale naval drills in these waters, demonstrating its ability to control and protect the vital waterway.
Analysts suggest the move is aimed at reaffirming Iran's role and status in the region while sending a tough signal to its adversaries. However, Tehran has also expressed readiness for dialogue to reduce tensions, provided all parties respect Iran's sovereignty.
