On June 19, Iran condemned a UN Security Council meeting on its nuclear program proposed by the United States, Britain, and France, calling it a provocative act. Iran's UN representative, Amir Saeid Iravani, argued the meeting lacks legal basis and aims to apply political pressure.
According to the Iranian official, Tehran's nuclear program is entirely for peaceful purposes and falls within its rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iravani stressed that Iran remains ready for dialogue but will not concede to external pressure.
The Security Council meeting comes amid heightened tensions over Iran's nuclear program after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran continues to enrich uranium at levels exceeding permitted limits. Western nations fear Iran is nearing the capability to produce nuclear weapons, which Tehran denies.
Iran's response follows the stalemate in negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) since late 2022. Washington and Europe accuse Iran of making excessive demands, while Tehran blames the US for unilaterally withdrawing from the agreement under former President Donald Trump.
