A glacier burst in the high-altitude Himalayas has triggered a catastrophic flash flood along the Nepal-China border. According to the latest figures, at least 797 people have died and more than 3,000 remain missing.
The flood, which struck last Wednesday, swept away everything in its path through the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river systems, destroying numerous villages, transport routes, and hydropower installations. The torrent was so powerful that victims' bodies were found hundreds of kilometers away, deep inside Indian territory.
In Nepal, hundreds of workers at hydropower plants remain unaccounted for. Around 93,000 people have been directly affected. Rescue efforts are severely hampered by collapsed bridges, blocked road tunnels, and repeated fresh landslides.
