Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said midfielder Jamal Musiala fainted on the pitch in two consecutive matches due to a change in medication for a neurological disorder the player is dealing with. He stressed there is nothing to worry about.
Musiala, 23, collapsed six minutes after coming off the bench in Tuesday's 4-2 friendly win over Heidenheim. Players from both teams surrounded the Germany international as he received medical attention. He subsequently left the field with assistance.
Earlier, Musiala also fainted in a friendly against Leipzig last weekend. German news agency DPA reported that he walked off on his own but remained in a dazed state.
After the second incident, Musiala posted a message on Instagram, explaining that he was diagnosed with a temporary form of "absence seizure," described as "easily treatable," caused by a neurological issue.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday's German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund, Kompany said he had spoken with Musiala and the player agreed to make the information public.
"I spoke with Jamal, and he said: 'No problem, coach, you can talk about it,'" Kompany said. "During treatment, he changed some things, and that caused some side effects. It's normal to try a different approach in treatment."
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the whole team supports Musiala, who wanted to go public with his condition. Musiala will not be in the squad on Saturday to have time to adapt to the public knowing about his situation.
"We have known about this throughout last season. The players also knew. For us, it has become part of daily life," Eberl said. "He changed his medication, so these situations became apparent. We will give him our full support—we have done and will continue to do so. We are doing this together."
Kompany said Musiala, who struggled to regain form after a serious injury in July 2025 that sidelined him for six months, has made significant progress and is ready to play.
"I am completely calm. I expect a strong return from Jamal. I have a feeling that he has the means to give answers. As a coach, I know he has made a big step forward," Kompany added.
