NPT Review Conference Fails to Adopt Final Document for Third Consecutive Time

The four-week Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) at UN headquarters in New York concluded without adopting a final document, marking the third consecutive failure after 2015 and 2022.

According to correspondents present during the final week of the conference, member states were unable to reach consensus on several key issues, including nuclear disarmament, transparency and arms control. Deep disagreements between nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear-weapon states were seen as the main cause of the failure.

Many analysts fear that this situation could render the NPT 'hollow', as commitments to nuclear disarmament are increasingly eroded while global nuclear arsenals continue to be modernized.
