South Korean President Lee on May 14 made a strong statement about the prospects for cooperation between Seoul and Tokyo, asserting that “the possibilities for cooperation with Japan are limitless.” The remarks came as the two countries work to advance bilateral ties after years of tensions.
In a speech before officials and business leaders, Lee stressed the importance of economic and security cooperation between Asia’s two leading economies. “We should not confine ourselves to existing areas of cooperation. The potential remains very, very large,” President Lee said.
Analysts say the statement signals a shift in South Korea’s stance, which previously saw frequent disputes with Japan over historical and trade issues. Since early 2026, Seoul and Tokyo have stepped up high-level dialogue, including bilateral meetings on the sidelines of international conferences.
Japan also welcomed President Lee’s statement. A Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tokyo is ready to discuss all potential areas of cooperation, from supply chains and high technology to regional security and climate change response.
Earlier on May 14, Japan separately warned its citizens against involvement in child exploitation in Indonesia, in a distinct diplomatic notice. However, President Lee’s remarks on Japan are seen as an important step toward promoting bilateral relations in the coming period.
