The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a former South African judge. The announcement was made on Friday in Oslo.

According to the committee, the prestigious award recognizes Pillay's efforts to advance peace and international law.

In its statement, the committee said Pillay played a key role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.

This year, the committee received nominations for 287 candidates. Among those mentioned earlier were the International Space Station, emergency rescue teams in Sudan, child protection workers in Ukraine and two leading international courts.

U.S. President Donald Trump has long coveted the prize and has repeatedly said he deserves it, despite his continuation of the war in Iran.
