Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has called for stronger economic partnership between Iran and Iraq, emphasizing that both nations possess significant potential to develop trade and investment cooperation.
Speaking during a meeting with senior Iraqi officials, Ghalibaf stated that expanding bilateral economic ties would not only benefit the peoples of both countries but also contribute to regional stability. He identified energy, transportation, and infrastructure as key areas for potential collaboration.
On the Iraqi side, officials expressed a desire to advance joint projects and facilitate smoother cross-border trade flows. Both sides agreed to continue dialogue and work toward realizing previously signed agreements.
Iran and Iraq have long maintained close economic relations, with bilateral trade amounting to billions of dollars annually. However, analysts note that there remains room for further expansion amid Iraq's reconstruction needs and ongoing international sanctions on Iran, which continue to shape bilateral dynamics.
Ghalibaf's visit and remarks come as the two countries seek to consolidate strategic ties, which have grown significantly in recent years across political, security, and economic spheres.
