The Georgian government has officially declared its refusal to join the latest European Union (EU) sanctions against Iran, highlighting a clear divergence in diplomatic positions between Tbilisi and Brussels amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
According to a statement from the office of Georgia's Prime Minister, the decision comes after the EU called on partner countries to implement new economic and political sanctions against Tehran related to its nuclear program and regional military activities. However, Georgia argues that joining the sanctions would not align with its national interests or existing bilateral commitments.
In an official statement, the Georgian government said: “We respect the EU's decisions, but imposing sanctions on Iran could harm Georgia's economic and trade relations in the region and falls outside the European integration path we are pursuing.” The statement also emphasized that Tbilisi continues to support diplomatic dialogue and peaceful solutions to international issues.
This move comes as Georgia seeks to balance its EU membership ambitions with maintaining stable relations with partners in the Middle East, including Iran—a key energy supplier for the Caucasus region. Some analysts suggest that refusing to join sanctions could slow Georgia's EU accession talks, which have already faced multiple delays over judicial reforms and media freedom concerns.
In June 2024, the EU expanded its sanctions list against Iran, including bans on exporting military equipment and travel restrictions on several Tehran officials. Iran has reacted strongly, stating it will not sit at the negotiation table if the EU continues to maintain these measures.
It remains unclear how other EU partner countries—often invited to join sanctions packages—will respond to Georgia's decision. However, observers note that this is not an isolated case, as many Caucasus and Central Asian nations are showing a trend toward diversifying their foreign policies, avoiding being drawn into major confrontations between global powers.
