Strong 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Japan

On June 19, Japan's Meteorological Agency announced it had upgraded the earthquake in the country's northeastern region from 6.9 to 7.2 magnitude. The quake struck at 9:52 p.m. local time, with its epicenter off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in the Tohoku region.

Immediately after the earthquake, authorities issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Experts warned that tsunami waves could reach up to 1 meter, and residents were advised to move to higher ground or further inland.

No immediate reports of major damage or casualties have been confirmed. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.

This is the strongest earthquake in Japan since March 2022, when a 7.4-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami warning and caused minor damage in the Tohoku region.
