The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a preliminary earthquake of magnitude 7.1 shook southwestern Japan on Tuesday (July 27), with multiple injuries recorded.
The quake occurred at about 8:15 p.m. local time, with its epicenter off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, forecasting waves of about 1 meter.
Local authorities said at least eight people were injured in Miyazaki, Oita and Kumamoto prefectures. Most injuries resulted from falls or objects falling during the quake.
Nuclear power plants in the region, including the Ikata plant in Ehime Prefecture and the Sendai plant in Kagoshima Prefecture, reported no abnormalities after the earthquake.
The tsunami warning was lifted after about two hours. However, experts have warned residents to be on alert for possible aftershocks in the coming days.
