Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the government has confirmed 13 deaths following the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan on Tuesday. She announced the figure during a press conference on Wednesday.
The earthquake struck on Tuesday afternoon, causing severe casualties and property damage. Emergency search and rescue efforts are underway to locate missing persons. The exact number of missing individuals has not yet been disclosed.
Shinkansen bullet train services in the affected area remain suspended after the quake. Roads and other infrastructure have also been damaged, hindering rescue operations.
The Japanese government has set up an emergency response center to coordinate relief efforts and assist affected residents. The Defense Ministry has also deployed Self-Defense Forces personnel to provide support.
Experts have warned of possible aftershocks in the coming days and urged residents to remain vigilant and follow local authorities' instructions.
