At 21:52 on June 19, 2026 (Japan time), a 6.9-magnitude earthquake shook the Tohoku region of Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed the epicenter was off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, at a depth of approximately 50 km.
According to Kyodo News, the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning. The JMA continues to collect data on damages or casualties. Nuclear plants in the area, including the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, reported normal operations.
Residents in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures reported feeling violent shaking lasting several seconds. Japan's Transport Safety Commission inspected Shinkansen bullet train lines in the region and temporarily halted service as a precaution. No major incidents have been reported in populated areas so far.
