A magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook the Amami Islands, an island region in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Wednesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the earthquake struck in the morning, and no tsunami warning was issued.
According to the JMA, the epicenter was located in the sea near the Amami Islands at a depth of approximately 40 km. The earthquake registered a 4 on the JMA seismic intensity scale in some areas, causing strong shaking but no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation and advising residents to remain cautious about possible aftershocks. JMA data indicates this is one of the strongest earthquakes in the region in recent times, but it did not trigger the tsunami warning system due to the characteristics of the epicenter.
