A businessman named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has won election as mayor of a remote district in Peru's Andes, according to local electoral data.
Flores, 45, who works in freight transport, won the race for mayor of the Queropalca district in the central Peruvian region of Huanuco and is set to take office on January 1.
According to Peru's National Office of Electoral Processes, the candidate of the left-wing Ahora Nacion party received 229 of the 663 votes cast in the October 4 election. His closest rival, right-wing candidate Gaspar Osorio, received 204 votes.
The electoral authority said Flores was a member of the Popular Force party of right-wing President Keiko Fujimori until 2025.
Although the name is associated with Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler, several candidates named Hitler have previously won elections in Peru. In 2021, physician Hitler Saavedra Casternoque was elected to Congress with the center-left Somos Peru party. In 2018, Hitler Alba Sanchez was elected mayor of the Yungar district in the Andes, and during his campaign described himself as a "good Hitler."
