Ukrainian-born sumo star Aonishiki confirmed on Wednesday that he is enduring pain in his left ankle and big toe as he prepares for his return to the ozeki rank at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, which begins September 13 at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
During his final preparatory training session, the 28-year-old wrestler said he is still recovering and must carefully calculate each move to avoid aggravating the injuries. "I still feel pain, but I have grown accustomed to competing under such conditions," Aonishiki told reporters.
Aonishiki, who made headlines as the first Ukrainian-born wrestler to earn the ozeki title, is expected to enter the tournament with the goal of solidifying his standing after a period sidelined by injury. Tournament organizers said his official bout schedule will be announced in the coming days.
This is seen as a significant challenge for Aonishiki, who will face top-tier wrestlers at Ryogoku Kokugikan, the venue for Japan's premier sumo bouts. Fans hope he can display his signature form even though he is not at peak physical condition.
