On March 5, in Tehran, the new United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Iran, Stefan Priesner, presented his credentials to Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, officially assuming the role of coordinating UN activities in this Middle Eastern nation.
During the ceremony, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian welcomed Mr. Priesner and underscored the importance of cooperation between Iran and the UN in the fields of development, humanitarian aid, and peace. He also expressed hope that the presence of the new coordinator would further advance the strategic partnership between the two sides.
Mr. Stefan Priesner, an Austrian national, has extensive experience in international development and has held key positions with the UN in Asia and Africa. Prior to his assignment in Iran, he served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Cambodia.
Speaking after the credential presentation, Mr. Priesner pledged to work diligently to strengthen cooperation between the UN and Iran, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, climate change response, and humanitarian support. He also highlighted the UN's role in fostering dialogue and regional stability.
Mr. Priesner's appointment comes at a time when Iran is facing multiple socioeconomic challenges as well as international issues related to its nuclear program. The UN has maintained a presence in Iran since 1950, with agencies such as UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, FAO, and UNHCR actively operating in the country.
