Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on August 25 that donations through a dedicated bank account established by the island's government to support people affected by the Kumamoto earthquake have surpassed NT$300 million (approximately $9.4 million) as of Monday (August 24).
The 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan in late July, causing severe casualties and property damage. Shortly afterward, the Taiwanese government opened a special bank account to receive contributions from individuals and businesses.
According to the latest updates, the total amount raised has reached NT$304.6 million, equivalent to about $9.45 million. The funds are expected to be transferred to Japan to assist with relief and reconstruction efforts in the affected area.
A representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Japan stated that the donations reflect the deep affection and solidarity of the Taiwanese people with the earthquake victims in Kumamoto. Contributions will continue to be accepted until the end of August.
