Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been transferred from prison to a hospital under police and security escort, according to local media reports.
The founder of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was moved from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Shifa International Hospital in the capital on Thursday evening, following orders from the Supreme Court, Pakistan's Geo News television channel reported.
Sources said authorities had completed preparations for the transfer of the 73-year-old former premier earlier in the day.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that the transfer be completed within two days. The Pakistani government had previously filed a petition opposing the decision.
PTI broadcast live the preparations for Khan's transfer but has not yet issued an official statement. The Pakistani government has also not responded.
The transfer responds to months-long demands by PTI and Khan's family, who have raised concerns about his health. Under the court order, Khan will be examined by a medical board that includes his personal physician.
Khan's lawyer Uzair Bhandari said his next hearing is scheduled for September 16, and under the order, the former prime minister is to remain in the hospital at least until that date.
This will be the longest period Khan has spent outside prison since his detention in August 2023 and subsequent convictions in several corruption-related cases that he and his party say are politically motivated.
Khan, a former cricket star turned politician, was ousted after a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022.
